Thermal underwear lines live or die on two things buyers rarely see on a spec sheet: whether the rib holds its memory after washing, and whether the next dye lot matches the last. A 2x2 rib with 4% spandex recovers better than single jersey at the waistband and ankle, and the 77/19/4 lyocell-wool recipe keeps the face smooth against skin so the garment does not read as "itchy wool". 220gsm, 125cm width, bulk dyeing to your colour standard, with sample yardage available for wear trials first.

Why This Blend: Three Fibres, Three Jobs

Lyocell at 77% carries the hand and the moisture. Lyocell is a cellulosic fibre produced in a closed-loop solvent process. In this blend it is the majority fibre, which is why the fabric feels smooth and slightly cool to the touch rather than woolly. It moves moisture away from the skin surface and releases it quickly, so the garment does not sit damp after light activity.
Wool at 19% carries the thermoregulation. Wool's fibre structure absorbs moisture vapour inside the fibre rather than holding it on the surface, which buffers the humidity next to skin as body temperature shifts between a heated room and the outdoors. At 19% it adds warmth without taking over the hand feel.
Spandex at 4% carries the recovery. In a 2x2 rib, spandex is what stops cuffs, waistbands and hems from going slack. Four percent is enough for comfort stretch in a base layer or a slim-fit garment without reading as compression.

Fabric Performance in Wear

Moisture handling. Lyocell transports moisture to the fabric surface where it evaporates; the open 2x2 rib structure leaves air channels between the wales instead of a flat, sealed surface.
Thermoregulation. The wool share buffers humidity and slows temperature swings, which is the difference between a base layer that works under a shirt in a heated office and one that only works outdoors.
Recovery and shape. The 2x2 rib with 4% spandex holds its line at cuffs, collars, waistbands and ankles — the points where single jersey stretches out first.
Hand feel. A 77% lyocell-dominant blend avoids the prickle associated with wool-rich knits, so the fabric can sit directly against skin.
Weight. At 220 g/m² the fabric sits above the 150–180 g/m² band common to lyocell-wool ribs on the market. That extra weight buys opacity, a heavier drape and warmth without a lining.

Q: What is 2x2 rib knit fabric used for?

A: 2x2 rib is a stretch knit with alternating two-knit, two-purl wales. It is used where recovery matters — cuffs, collars, waistbands, base layers, leggings and semi-fitted tops. In this 220 g/m² version it suits thermal underwear and mid-weight base layers rather than lightweight summer jersey.

Q: Is this fabric warm enough for winter base layers?

A: At 220 g/m² with 19% wool, yes for autumn through early spring and for indoor winter wear. For extreme cold or expedition use, a heavier weight or a higher wool content should be specified — both can be discussed as a development.

Q: Does it shrink or pill?

A: Both depend on fibre, finishing and washing method, so we do not quote a figure without testing. Shrinkage and pilling results are measured per lot and can be issued as a report with your bulk order.

Q: Can you dye to my Pantone colour?

A: Yes. We produce a lab dip for approval first, and the approved dip becomes the bulk standard. Shade continuity is checked lot by lot against that dip.

Q: Can you change the composition or weight?

A: Yes, within reason. Common requests are 180 g/m² for a lighter summer version, or a higher wool share for colder markets. Send the target spec and we will confirm feasibility, hand feel impact and price before sampling.
